Sullivan: Turkey will block
Iran-US plan to partition Iraq
Turkey will block
the Iran-US-Kurdish plan to partition Iran. Turkey, a NATO
member, is now making clear that it will not allow Iraq to be broken
into
three states. Turkey is also making clear that it will intervene in
Iraq
with military forces, if necessary, to counter PKK terrorism that is
protected by the Kurdish regional government.
Moreover, sentiment
is growing in Turkey that Iran is becoming too powerful
in the region, due to US support, as shown by Iran's recent gains in
Lebanon
and Iraq. Turkey believes that Iran fosters an independent Kurdistan
and the
expulsion from Iraq of the Sunni population, beginning in Basra and
Kirkuk.
Turkey's concerns
about Iran are shared across the leadership spectrum, from
Prime Minister Erdogan to Gen. Yasar Buyukanit, recently aappointed
as chief
of the Turkish general staff. See "Pressure Mounts for Strike Against
Kurds
in Iraq," Andrew Borowiec, Washington Times.
