Its March, spring has sprung, the Rodeo is 87 years old and CERAWEEK is celebrating its 38th year since it first came to Houston. This year’s theme, “New World of Rivals” covering such things as geopolitics, pricing, technology and women in energy. Daniel Yergin and Cambridge Energy Research Associates started the first conference to a small audience at the Westin Galleria where it was held for about 30 years. The early conferences were only a couple of days. The participants were mostly from the USA with a focuse on the LPG business. How do I know? I was a participant.
Since its start, CERAWEEK has grown to be the most important gathering of energy professionals, government officials, royalty, financiers, journalist and other important people from around the world. The gathering covers everything related to energy and is packed into only 5 days.
Sunday was set up day for the event. CERAWEEK by HIS Markit takes over the Hilton Americas and part of the George R Brown convention center. People were registering, workers were setting up rooms for presentations and meetings. Security was also present and ready to protect and keep the event safe. In the press room IHS personnel were going over last-minute adjustments to the schedule. All this showed the kind of logistics needed to put on an event of this magnitude. While I was there registering, I ran into a few familiar faces including former Energy Secretary Ernie Moniz who was looking for the restaurant.
According to CERAWEEK by HIS Markit they anticipate more than 4500 delegates from over 70 countries including 35 Ministers and government officials. There are over 800 speakers in 400 sessions. There will also be may workshops and programs. Social media will also play a key role in keeping people informed and connected. It should be an insightful week.
