VenEconomy: Advance on the war front
It’s no longer just what he says; it’s what he decrees and consolidates.
The warmongering language typical of Hugo Chávez and his acolytes has now been joined by actions that show that his bellicose warnings are not something to be taken lightly or ignored.
It is not mere happenstance that this Sunday, April 11, eight years after the bloody action by the Puente Llaguno gunmen, the President warned in his Aló Presidente that “the battle has not ended” or that, to prevent possible coups d’état, invasions, and threats of war by the Empire, “the people are armed. We’ll have rifles for all the people.”
To back up his warnings, he has the Bolivarian National Militia, something similar to Adolph Hitler’s SS, which, under the direct orders of the President, complements (or usurps?) the national defense functions of the Bolivarian National Armed Force.
So as to leave no doubt about the relevance of this praetorian corps, April 13 has been decreed the “Day of the Bolivarian National Militia, the People in Arms, and the April Revolution,” and, therefore, a day of national celebration. The idea is to exalt in people’s memories the “historical heroic action” in which the people of Venezuela supposedly took part in 2002, even though what those dates bring to mind are tragic, bloody, violent days when dozens of Venezuelans lost their lives.
Further proof of the intention of taking the Commander-in-Chief’s avidity for the bellicose beyond mere words is the creation of Guerrilla Communications Commandos, which were sworn in on April 12 by the new Communications and Information Minister, Tania Díaz.
These commandos, fashioned after the Hitler Youth, are part of the Capital District Government’s Revolutionary People’s Communication Program and are made up of units of 25 high school students who will “voluntarily” combat the “imperial media dictatorship” using communicational logic, state-of-the-art technology, and extensive “revolutionary” ideological grounding. The “communications guerrillas” will deploy their indoctrinating recruitment effort daily using any means of expression, including the Internet, mobile telephony, murals, alternative means of communication, and artistic and cultural activities.
In the view of many analysts, all this aggressive language and the activation of these parallel militia and guerrilla structures are part of a strategy to continue injecting the fear factor in order to discourage free thought, inhibit free speech, and punish dissenting opinion.
This month, the government is definitely resuming its efforts to push ahead along the path of the communist-style revolutionary radicalization being cheered on by the President.
