VenEconomy: Enough said
On December 10, 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly approved and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the international community of nations took the first step towards a commitment, adopted by consensus, on the issue of respect for human rights.
The 30 articles of that Declaration are “the foundation stone of 20th century international law” in human rights. While those who signed the declaration are not legally bound to respect it, the moral force of its universal acceptance is such that it makes complying with it unavoidable.
Once a country signs this Declaration, it is inalienably committed to acknowledging that every human being possesses inherent civil, political, economic, and cultural rights and to respecting those rights. Not only that, it is forbidden to make distinctions for reasons of race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, economic status, birth or any other condition.
Here are some of the Universal Rights of Man:
- The right to life, freedom, and security of person.
The right to equality before and the protection of the law.
The right not to be arbitrarily detained, imprisoned or exiled.
The right to be heard publicly and with justice by an independent, impartial court to determine one’s rights and obligations or for the examination of any criminal accusation brought against one.
The right to be protected against acts that violate one’s fundamental rights recognized by the Constitution or by Law.
The right to own property, alone or in association with others; no one shall be deprived arbitrarily of his property.
The right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion.
The right to the freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the right to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media, regardless of frontiers.
The right to the freedom of peaceful assembly and association; no one may be compelled to belong to an association.
- The right to take part in the government of one’s country, directly or through freely chosen representatives; everyone has the right of equal access to public service in his country.
Venezuela, as an original member of the United Nations since November 15, 1945, is a signatory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This Wednesday, April 15, the national and international press reported that Venezuela had been included, for the fifth year running, in the Annual Report of the OAS’s Inter-American Commission on Human Rights as one of the countries where evidence exists that the human rights of its citizens are not respected. Venezuela is also a member of both the OAS and this Commission.
