Scott Sullivan :
How Gen McChrystal can save Afghanistan

President Obama is foolish to dismiss Gen McChrystal as the commander of Obama's Special operations forces (SOF) in Afghanistan.

McChrystal wants this job because he knows he can do it. McChrystal has been given a huge gift. to learn from Yugoslavia's wars how to avoid war in Afghanistan. In this regard, the good news is that a strong left wing political revival is underway in the Middle East, driven by a backlash to the excesses of  Iranian fascism. The left wing revival is also driven by significant Chinese engagement in Afghanistan and significant Russian engagement in Syria.

This left wing revival is already changing the Middle East and South Asia power alignment for the better. For example, China, followed by India, has displaced Pakistan as the dominant influence in Afghanistan. This is good news for Afghanistan because it was foolish to believe, as was the convention wisdom of last week, that Pakistan could be an Afghan ally while at the same time advancing territorial claims against Afghanistan.

Moreover, it is good news that Pakistan and Iran have formed a new alliance, an alliance that could drag both of them down! Finally,on the Syria issue, Russia's protection of Syria, as shown by Russia's sales of advanced weapons to Syria, as well as Russian naval deployments that protect Syria, may cause Iran to back off intimidating not only Syria but Iraq as well.

More good news about the Middle East political left-wing revival is on the way. Someone in the Defense Department must not only monitor these changes but also suggest ways in which these changes can be used to isolate Iran, find a constructive role for the Saudi-backed Wahabi extremists, and possibly even find a constructive role foro Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. Gen McChrystal could take this job.

One additoional way that GEN McChtystal could promote creative thinking on political reconciliation in Afghanistan would be to revisit the highly successful political reconciliation process in Cambodia, once the Khmer Rouge's war of national liberation had run its course. This new anti-imperialist Afghan political coalition, based on Cambodia's earlier governing model from the 1960's, will work again. Karzai is Prince Sihanouk, Mullah Omar is Khieu Samphan, and Osama bin Laden is Pol Pot. Meanwhile, Iran and Pakistan together are imperial Vietnam, who will go down to a crushing defeat at the hands of President Karzai, who will rescue poor Afghanistan, just as the Khmer Rouge, China and the US rescued Cambodia, the last victim of Vietnamese imperialism.
