Democrats
well ahead
Here in the US, we are almost ready to give the
Presidency to the Democrats given the polls we've seen
in recent weeks suggesting that the "heartland" of
American, Ohio, is turning very, very "blue" these days.
It
is bad enough that Virginia, perhaps the most staunchly
Republican state in the Union in recent years, will soon
have two Democratic Senators representing her in the
Congress. Our teeth are gnashing already at the very
thought of it. But worse is the fact that no modern day
Republican candidate has won the Presidency without
carrying Ohio, and Ohio now seems more and more likely
to go into the Democratic column next November if we
are to believe the latest figures from Quinnipiac
University, whose polling has been quite spot on in
recent years. Last week, matching the three leading
Democratic contenders in all possible combinations
against the leading Republican contenders, the
Democrats won all of the races save for Senator McCain
against Sen. Obama... and even then McCain "won" by
42-41. The leaders, Sen. Clinton against Mr. Guiliani,
had Ms. Clinton winning 47-40.
It is of course rather early yet, and much can... and
almost certainly will... change; but to know that none of
the current leading Republican candidates can defeat
any of the Democrats is disconcerting to say the very
least. Higher taxes, here we come!
