The situation
in Turkey and its border with "
Kurdistan" has cooled in the past twenty four hours. US Secretary
of State Rice was in Baghdad yesterday and said that the US, Iraq
and Turkey have a “common interest” in keeping Kurdish
rebels from attacking Turkey from within Iraq. She said that We
need an overall, comprehensive approach to this problem. No one
should do anything that
threatens to destabilise the north.... [Nonetheless], this was
a Turkish decision, and we have made clear to the Turkish government
that we continue to be concerned about anything that could lead
to civilian casualties or anything that could destabilise the north.
Sec'y Rice then visited Kirkuk, where she met with members of a
civilian-military reconstruction unit and
several provincial politicians before leaving..
