Super
Tuesday's results
The results from the "Super Tuesday" primaries are still
coming in as
we write TGL this morning but we know this much: the pre-election
polls were
shockingly
wrong yet again, and that shocking "wrong-ness" has felled the candidacy
of Gov. Romney. Sen. McCain has all but swept the Republican primaries, and with
Romney losing California his last hope to get to the convention and win the nomination
there is gone. Sen. McCain, the war hero but a Democrat in a Republican suit,
will be the Republican nominee. Should he win the November election, he will
be
the oldest President ever to take office. We'll be comfortable with his hand
on the "black briefcase" that follows the US President around everywhere,
but we shall be wholly uncomfortable with his economics.
We look for Gov. Romney to officially drop out from the race in the next several
days, following meetings with his staff, and perhaps meetings with Sen. McCain
and his staff also. That would be the gentlemanly thing to do, and it would save
him several tens of millions of his own dollars at the same time.
As for the Democrats, Sen. Clinton has won the large states of New Jersey, New
York and California; Sen. Obama has won the smaller states. She won fewer states
but more delegates; he won more states, but fewer delegates... and neither one
has the nomination sued up. So the Democrats shall slog on to the Virginia, Texas
and Ohio primaries ahead, but the betting money shall be on Ms. Clinton to eventually
win. All we know for certain is that for the first time in a very long while,
America will elect an ex-Senator as its next President. Look for some young,
photogenic Governors to be named to the Vice Presidential posts as a result....
likely from
the South. Look for Warner of Virginia and Sanford of S. Carolina, for example,
for the Democrats and the Republicans respectively.
