Doomed
The Wisconsin primary,
which we thought to be a pivotal point for Sen. Clinton's campaign,
has come and
gone, and with it Sen. Clinton's hopes for the Presidency. She
lost... badly... to Sen. Obama: 41-58%. In a state that was only
a short while ago strongly in her column, Sen. Clinton lost even
her most powerful constituency: white, female voters. As we said
two weeks ago, when historians look back at this year's campaign
and write about when it was that Sen. Clinton began to lose control
of what seemed to have been her nomination to lose, they will
point to those speeches given by her husband, former President
Clinton, when he became angry with questions directed at both
him and her. His facade of a graceful but invincible political
manner fell apart, and with his, hers. When she lost the primaries
in the next several days, the image of the Clinton's as invincible
crumbled, and those within the Democratic Party who had been
fearful of crossing the Clintons lost that fear. One by one the
party regulars jumped ship. Her campaign funding fell. She had
to lend her own money to her campaign; she re-shuffled her staff,
and the rest is history. As we say here in the South, one can
call in the dogs 'cause this hunt is over. Sen. Obama will win
the nomination, and he may well "win out" the remaining
primaries. Certainly we'd not be surprised if he were to do so.
