Puttin's
hope
Russians
go to the polls next Sunday to elect a new president. Puttin
can not be reelected. Four candidates are registered, the
favourite is Putin ally Dmitry Medvedev, who is currently Russia's
first deputy
prime minister and chairman
of Gazprom. The no chance rivals -- Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov, populist
firebrand Vladimir Zhirinovsky and the virtually unknown Andrei
Bogdanov.
Numbers of voters: 109 million Russians are eligible to vote in Russia and abroad
Polls: Main polls said Medvedev
will gain well over the 50 percent needed to win in the first round and avoid
a run-off.
Election Monitoring: Thousands of observers from the main political parties
will be monitoring. But Europe's main election observation body, the Organisation
for Security and Cooperation in Europe, has boycotted the vote citing restrictions
imposed by Russia.
Next Steps: The new president to a four-year term will take up in May.
Putin
has said that if Medvedev wins the election he will serve as
prime minister, but Medvedev has avoided talking about the issue.
