Hanging on
The
election results are still not in from Zimbabwe, and Dr. Mugabe
is now resorting to abject violence in
a last ditch attempt to remain in power. Yesterday, the offices
of the oppositions party in Harare, the nation's capital, was
ransacked, and although it is not clear that Dr. Mugabe's men
were responsible, clearly they were. We, however, do not doubt
for a moment that Dr. Mugabe will try to blame the opposition
for the troubles, and will be very surprised were he not to say
that the opposition party itself ransacked its own office, hoping
to blame the ZANU-PF for the problems. Nothing in Zimbabwe is
as it seems except for Mugabe's blind desire to remain in power.
In the nearly three decades of his rule, Mugabe has succeeded
in taking this once verdant, "bread basket" of southern
Africa and turning it into a "basket case" instead.
Zimbabwe, when it was Rhodesia, exported maize, and tobacco and
wheat and coffee and amazingly high quality cotton around the
world. It fed itself and scores of other nations. Its goods were
sought after, even despite the fact that Rhodesia was anathema
politically because of its racist regime in power at the time.
Now, it cannot come close to feeding itself. Now it must instead
be fed. And yet, Mugabe has his supporters, who've worked to
keep him in power. Certainly it helps that the Army's leadership remains
very, very loyal. .
