Inside, confidential and off the recordAfghanistan Confusion
President Obama’s confusion over Afghanistan is beginning to resemble his confusion over policy on closing the US prison at Guantanamo. As we have learned, prior to Obama’s announcement on closing Guantanamo, no one his entire administration had developed a workable plan on this issue. When US disarray on Guantanamo policy emerged, Obama appeared to have walked into a a self-made trap.
As with Guantanamo closure, no one in the Obama administration appears to have developed a workable plan for dealing with Afghanistwan. GEN McChrystal’s plan -- which Obama seems to favor --] is seen by most Democrats as deeply flawed because it would lead to perpetual US military escalation in Ahghanistan with no certainty otory. In addition, Jewish Democratic constituencies are beginning to worry that Obama's obsession with Afghanistan is taking pressure off Iran and Venezuela to be responsive on nuclear, foreign policy, and human rights issues, as evidenceed by Iran';s defiance last week with Obama's recent demands on Iraonian nukes.
Finally, Obama will continue to prosper if he can turn these off-year elections into a personal opportunity. Above all, Obama should thank Senator Reid for suspending further Senate consideration of the health care reform bill. Obama will now be forced to turn his full attention to US foreign policy and national security, as I recommended at the very beginning of his administration. My assessment was that Obama's successes as US Commander in Chief would increase Obama's stature to fight for Healh Care Reform, particularly in terms of improving Obama's ability to gain right wing and Republican Party support for a Nixon-style reform of the US Health Care system.
Obama's top foreign policy priority will be to deter the Balkans Axis of Germany, Iran, the pro-Nazi Balkan states of WW II, the Italian and Albanian Mafias,and the pro-German forces in the Vatican. Obama shall also foster close relations with Russia and China to deter Iran's attacks on the Holocaust.
