Saudis' thorn
As for the “good” military news, little has been written of it, but the Saudi Arabian government has made several deep incursions into the desert region that is the boundary between it and Yemen on the far southern portion of the Saudi Peninsula. Yemen, once the only Marxist government on the peninsula, and a clear thorn in the side of the Saudi government, has been the home for “Jihadi” organisation for years, to Riyadh’s continued dismay, so this week, Saudi Arabia has escalated its military offensive against Shi’ia rebels in northern Yemen by blockading the latter. Prince Khaled bin Sultan, the Saudi assistant defense minister, said that “rebels” that had been operating on the Saudi/Yemeni border must “withdraw dozens of kilometers” inside the Yemen before Saudi Arabia will end its military action against the rebels and ostensibly against the Yemeni government.
The Saudis have long suspected that it is Iran that has been supplying and supporting the rebel groups operating in Yemen, and almost certainly that is true. Yesterday, after several days of Saudi actions against the rebels, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Manochehr Mottaki, said
The regional countries and especially the neighboring countries, we recommend seriously they not interfere in the internal issues of Yemen and instead try to restore stability in Yemen.
We’ve not read of any Saudi response to the Iranian statement, but we suspect that the Saudis will respond by driving deeper into Yemen and will eventually destroy the rebel forces there. To this we say, “Well done.”
