Weak Europe

The new European President is not Mr. Tony Blair, but is instead Mr. Herman van Rompuy of Belgium. As we said yesterday (Thu. Nov 19), it had to be either Mr. Juncker of Luxembourg or Mr. van Rompuy of Belgium, for the great powers of Europe… England, France and Germany… would never allow one of the other’s to hold that position. Like the large tribes of Africa that have no choice but to elect one of the heads from the smaller tribes to be the national leader as happens to often in Kenya, or Uganda, or even Nigeria, the states of Europe are envious enough of one another and leery enough of one another never to allow one of the leaders of the powerful nations to take control of the helm. As one blogger said, “Weak names for a weak Europe. No wonder the US is pleased.” And as another said, regarding the appointment of Mr. Van Rompuy to the Presidency and Baronness Asthton to the position of Trade Commissioner, “having never heard of either of them, their profiles suggest both [are] studiously uninteresting.” Another said, “For some reason I did not receive my ballot to elect Mr. Van Rompuy,” and yet another said “A good and boring choice; a compromise, the Belgian way.” Ouch!
