“ Could ” ?
The media here in the US is openly supportive of the whole global warming question and of Copenhagen and of actions to be taken to slow the global economy and thus lower the world’s “carbon footprint.” The latest news from Climate-gate” has now quieted the media down at all. Indeed, it has only served to force them to ramp up their rhetoric. For example, the Associate Press coverage of the upcoming meeting in Copenhagen noted the following regarding carbon dioxide emissions:
That emission path could drive temperatures by 2060 to at least 7 degrees higher than preindustrial levels, scientists say. That would
push the world deeper into the time of climate disruption, unusual droughts and powerful storms, species die-offs, spreading tropical diseases, coastal flooding and other unpredictable consequences
The operative here, buried in the supposed “carnage” is “could.” Not “will,” not “shall,” but “could.” Then again, global warming “could,” in our view save thousands of lives because cold weather kills far more people than does warm; it could increase crop production and feed millions more people because few if any crops grow in freezing weather but most grow well as temperatures rise; melting ice “could” increase the world’s supply of potable water in a world that is already short of such; warmer weather “could” reduce the amount of energy used to heat homes and factories and schools and hospitals in northern climates, and it “could” allow for drilling for oil in areas now too cold to allow for such drilling. But did the Associated Press report these “good coulds?” Not a
word.
