Re-writing history

Turning our attention to President Obama’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize yesterday in Norway… a prize we still cannot believe was given to him after only few months in office, but that was a story for another day and shall remain a story for years into the future which we needn’t go into this morning… let us begin by saying that the speech was, at first hearing, wondrous. This was and is Mr. Obama’s milieu in which he most prospers. Give him a stage and give him a message and he really is mesmerizing. Too, his thesis that we cannot stand down from military power and that the US can and will remain the world’s dominant power were spot on. We grant him credit for those statements, for we did notexpect them.

However, he erred badly when he said that he was following in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan who had brought the US and the former Soviet Union closer together when Mr. Reagan fought for nuclear arms control and had embraced “perestroika” along with Mr. Gorbachev. Mr. Reagan did no such thing. Mr. Reagan mocked “perestroika” and Mr. Reagan walked away from Reykjavik when Mr. Gorbachev came forth with proposals that Reagan found wholly without merit. By standing down, Reagan heroically brought the Soviet Union down; by refusing to accept Gorbachev’s proposals, Reagan looked the Soviets and their leader in the eyes, did not blink, and waited until they did. He did not embrace arms control; he ramped arms production up, and in the ramping up brought the Soviets down. God Bless Ronald Reagan. Embrace “perestroika?” Hardly! President Obama was trying to re-write history and to re-write President Reagan’s legacy. We cannot allow him to do so.
