Ayatollah Montazeri
Last week there were student up-risings once again in Tehran and Qum, Iran for the first time since the election earlier this year, except this time the street fighting took on a somewhat different look, for this time the students had the support of one of the highest ranking Islamic clerics: the Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri. During the earlier student rebellion that ended badly for the students and for the government, it was clear that the Grand Ayatollah supported their protests but he was never as public about that support as the students had hoped. They needed the “cover” that a Grand Ayatollah could offer them, and although he supported them tacitly he never openly wrote of his support. This time, when the students were confronted by local police and the “Basij”…the non-official but nonetheless ruthless and very violent militia that openly support the Ahmadinejad regime…Grand Ayatollah Montazeri said that the “Basij” were “assailants [who have] acted against religion and must pay blood money” to the families of those they had harmed.
