Ali-Mohammadi

We go this morning to Iran where Dr. Massoud Ali-Mohammadi was killed by an IED (an improvised explosive device)when leaving his home yesterday in Tehran. Who is Dr. Massoud Ali-Mohammadi you ask, and why is his death important? Those are reasonable questions, and Dr. Ali-Mohammadi was a professor of quantum physics at the University of Tehran and was apparently closely tied to the nation’s nuclear power and nuclear weapons programs. He was also a strong proponent of the anti-government/anti-Ahmadinejad movement that had been growing in recent months in Iran and had openly supported the candidacy of Mr. Mousavi against President Ahmadinejad last year.

Both the government AND anti-Iranian forces AND the US and/or Israel have been given credit for Dr. Ali- Mohammadi’s assassination. At this point, no group has taken responsibility for his death, but all sides are pointing to another as the organisation responsible. All we know for certain at this point is that this was a very sophisticated operation, requiring that the bomb that killed him be set at the proper place, and that his travel path be watched, and the detonation of the bomb be coordinated to the second. This was not the job of some second rate protest organisation, but was in all likelihood done by an well organized, well funded, and highly sophisticated group. Clearly the government wanted him removed from a position of authority given his anti-government actions in the past. Clearly the Israelis wanted him removed from the scene given his importance to the Iranian nuclear power program. Even the US would have wanted him removed from his nuclear power authority, but at the same time the US intelligence agencies would have liked to have had him remain as a leader of the anti-government movement.

It is all very confusing at the moment, and if we had to guess we’d assume that the government in Tehran is the most likely candidate to have had Dr. Ali Mohammadi killed, removing him from the protest movement and also able to blame his death upon the Israelis. All we know for certain is that things in Tehran are hotting up… swiftly.
