Alienating Beijing ?
ON THE POLITICAL FRONT, relations between China and the US are at the centre stage this morning, US President Barack Obama will host the Dalai Lama at the White House today despite China's warning that the meeting with him will further damage already strained ties. China is still openly angry about the US decision to sell new weaponry and aircraft to Taiwan; however, the White House has sought to strike a balance in the Dalai Lama's visit. Seeking to avoid alienating Beijing, President Obama delayed meeting the Dalai Lama until after he’d first seen Chinese leaders several months ago. During today visit, as we understand it, the President will not appear in public with the Dalai Lama and he will not meet with the Dalai Lama in the Oval Office. Meetings there are generally granted to heads of state, and the Dalai Lama is clearly not the head of any state. This distinction will hopefully signal to Beijing that the Dalai Lama is seen as a religious figure only.
The problems between the US and China are made all the clearer in light of the fact that the USS Nimitz has set anchor off short from Hong Kong. US aircraft
carriers are America’s way of manifesting is power abroad, and there is a very real reason why it is there off short of Hong Kong and thus China while the US is meeting with the Dalai Lama. China is not amused, as Queen Victoria might have said.
