Iran nuclear

The Iranians find themselves more and more isolated in the Gulf these days as they move seemingly inexorably toward some resolution of their nuclear situation. It is clear to everyone that the Iranians are moving as swiftly toward a nuclear threat capability of some sort, despite protestations to the contrary that they are moving only toward a peaceful nuclear power program. Clearly they are not.

Recently the United Arab Emirates found itself on the receiving end of Iranian anger when the UAE’s Ambassador to the United States, Yousef al-Otaiba, said rather bluntly that Iran is clearly moving to become a nuclear threat and that the UAE Cannot live with a nuclear Iran. I am willing to absorb what takes place at the expense of the security of the UAE.

The UAE and Iran have been at odds in recent months even before this diplomatic flare-up, for the Emirates were amongst the first Gulf States to implement the UN’s sanctions against Iran. Iran then retaliated by cutting back on “economic relations” between itself and the UAE. This trade is no inconsiderable and is estimated at $10 billion annually in both directions. In June, the UAE’s Central Bank froze the assets and bank accounts of several dozen Iranians that it suspected of facilitating international terrorist activities, angering Tehran even further. Further, Iran and the Emirates have been at odds for years over the sovereignty of three islands in the Straits of Hormuz… Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tumb Islands… these islands being right in the middle of the Straits and of considerable military importance.

The point here is that Iran finds itself at ever greater enmity with
its neighbours in the Persian Gulf as they become more and more concerned that a nuclear capable Iran shall exert greater and greater influence in the region. They want Iran stopped. So should almost everyone.
