Baseball Ambassador?

On a recent The New York Times article by Simon Romero about U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela, U.S. William Brownfield there are interesting quotes form Hugo Chavez. ''Start packing your bags, mister, if you keep on provoking us,'' Mr. Chavez said on TV this year. ''Because I'll kick you out of here.''

However, Brownfield carries on despite Chavez remarks, he is allways in good humor and making jokes about baseball, his favorite past time.

Romero's piece refers to that Brownfield has repeatedly had to deny claims that the Pentagon is preparing to send the Marines to invade Venezuela, and that in brief meeting last year with Chavez, Brownfield recommended holding a friendly baseball game between the staffs of the presidential palace and the United States Embassy, on the condition that the marines played on the American side. ''I have only seven of them here,'' he told Mr. Chavez, who reactedwith a cool smile and ended the encounter. A spokeswoman at Venezuela's communications ministry said she was unable to confirm details of the meeting. An embassy spokesman said only, ''On matters as important as baseball, we don't comment.''
