Trojan
horse
Our friend Dennis Garthman wrote this interesting comment on its
Garthamn Letter on Thursday.
Regarding the recent resignation of the Saudi Ambassador to the
US, Prince Turki, and his removal back to Riyadh, we are still
as confused as anyone could be as to the reasons. We've read manifestly
differing accounts as to what his removal means, and they range
all across the board from internal Saudi royal family bickering
to enormous global geo-political concerns. Some have argued that
the King removed Prince Turki as a means to express Saudi Arabia's
anger over possible removal of troops from Iraq too quickly, thus
allowing the Sunnis there to be at risk from the Shi'ia and from
Iran; others suggest that there was internal rivalry between Prince
Bandar and Prince Turki and the King simply wanted them closer
to keep their rivalry within Saudi Arabian boundaries. We've no
idea if either is correct, nor do we dismiss myriad other "explanations."
. Nor can anyone else. Indeed, at the moment we are not certain
if anyone within the Saudi government really knows what has happened
there.
What is now rumoured is that the next Saudi Ambassador to the
US may be Adel al-Jubeir, the young and very articulate Saudi
non-royal who has been on television and has been interviewed
by the press time and time and time again over the course of the
past several years [Ed. Note: He has even been reported in the
past to have "escorted" Ms. Campbell Brown of NBC Television
in years past... before she was married of course.] He has handled
these press appearances with extra-ordinary aplomb; has served
in junior roles at the Saudi embassy in Washington, and
has served for the past several years as King Abdullah's personal
foreign affairs advisor. Mr. al-Jubeir was educated here in the
US, earning his B.A. at North Texas
State University and earning his M.A. at Georgetown. His command
of English is astounding...even down to the idioms of everyday
life. If he really is to be the next
Ambassador to the US, Saudi Arabia has chosen a very likeable
young man for this important job, and King Abdullah has put a
close associate in the position and thus
shall be putting his even larger "stamp" on US/Saudi
relations.
