Dismaying: Clinton vs Trump: 47-42

Turning to American presidential politics, Sen. Sanders of Sec'y Clinton debated one another last evening in preparation for the upcoming Nevada caucus and the far more important S. Carolina primary. During the debat we found ourselves laughing aloud at the comments by Sec'y Clinton when she said that the US economy was “rigged” in favor of the rich... this from a women whose family's net worth is now measured in the several hundreds of millions of dollars funneled into her and her husband's Foundation. Really, you cannot make this stuff up.

Sen. Sanders has enjoyed several days in the “positive spin sun” following his victory in New Hampshire, and indeed he's seen a large net inflow of funds into his campaign since Monday evening, but his brand of openly avowed socialism shall not play well in the South. Sec'y Clinton will defeat him rather handily and his campaign with wither as he loses one state after another in the trek across the South.

Ms. Clinton received the coveted endorsement of the Congressional Black Caucus in Congress yesterday... an endorsement Sen. Sanders want ed very badly but did not get. Hoping to get that endorsement, Sen. Sanders met and openly solicited the support of Rev. Al Sharpton. He failed.

As for the Republicans, Mr. Trump continues to lead the field by a wide and growing margin. This, we shall admit, is terribly dismaying for Mr. Trump is a trade protectionist; he is badly misinformed on the topic of currency manipulation; he is a strong believer in the federal government's right to imminent domain; and his tax policies are more Democrat than Republican. But he has struck a vein of anger amongst middle-class Americans that we find disconcertingly real and sadly feral. We are reminded of the support once given to the supposed “conservative” Gov. George Wallace by lower-to-middle class Americans decades ago, whose campaign rushed ahead on the tide of class-envy, trade protectionism and racism, where Mr. Trump's races ahead on class envy and illogical fears of immigration.

Nonetheless, with each passing day the chances of an “adult” winning the Republican Party's nomination grow dimmer and the odds of Mr. Trump's winning grow larger. We can still hope for the ascendance and traction on the part of Governors Kasich or Bush as the trek through th primaries heats up, but with each passing day our hopes grow dimmer. This we find dismaying for the latest national polls have Ms. Clinton besting Mr. Trump by a material margin: 47-42.
