Russia's Avangard missile

Avangard Russia's hypersonic glide vehicle - Play video

The test of the Avangard took place on 26 December, when it reached
a speed of Mach 27 and successfully struck a target 6,000 km away.

The missile was first presented by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March along with the hypersonic air-to-ground missile Kh-47M2 Kinzhal and the Peresvet laser system. According to the Russian president, Avangard is capable of changing course mid-flight, thereby avoiding being tracked and intercepted. He noted that the speed of the missile was in excess of Mach 20 and that it is capable of penetrating any existing missile defence system

President Vladimir Putin witnessed a final test of a hypersonic glide vehicle, one of a series of new weapons that will be able to overcome existing and future defenses: the Avangard. Speaking from Moscow, but having watched the test which took place on Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, President Putin told the press and assembled Russian government and military officials that the test was a success and that “Russia has a new kind of strategic weapon.” He said deployment of the Avangard will begin next year and it is able to carry conventional or nuclear weapons and maneuver past defenses.

The Avangard is one of several that Putin touted in his state-of-the-nation speech earlier this year as Russia’s answer to U.S. missile defenses. He said Avangard “heads for its target like a meteorite” and according to reports the Avangard can accelerate to Mach 20 and when approaching its target is capable of sharp and very high speed evasive maneuvers rendering it
effectively invulnerable. This is the new weapon we have warned about that Russia has spent its money on rather than on building aircraft carriers. This is the newest anti-aircraft weaponry available and it renders the US’ carrier fleet materially less potent and materially more vulnerable. This is not good.
