Taking a Hard Line
President Trump called Syrian President Bashar al-Assad an “animal” and warned him—as well as his allies Russia and Iran— of a “big price” to pay for a suspected chemical attack that killed dozens of civilians in a rebel-held Syrian town on Saturday. The U.K. and France both denounced the alleged chemical attack as an unconscionable crime, while Russia called the report a “hoax” and warned the U.S. against any military response. Medical professionals and human-rights groups said the alleged chemical attack appeared to use a mix of chlorine and a nerve agent; graphic videos showed lifeless families in their homes and doctors frantically trying to save children gasping for air. Early Monday several missiles hit a Syrian air base , killing at least 14 military personnel, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Pentagon officials said the U.S. had launched no strikes against Syria. Russia blamed Israel, which declined to comment.
