Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to your publication of a commentary by the so called climate scientist Fred Singer. I will not debate the "content" of his writing, that is already well covered by a number of well renowned organisations. For a summary, see below under the Real Climate (realclimate.org) banner. If you trust your readers I think you should make this link available on teh web site and give them the opportunity to make up their own minds.

But I would like to point to your responsibility as an editor in accepting the statement that Mr Singer is a climate scientist. In the scientific world there is one generally accepted way of checking the validity of someone stating to be an expert in a certain field and that is to check the publication record. A search of Mr Singer in the Web of Science database (http://portal.isiknowledge.com) with the following criteria yielded this outcome.

A double check with Singer F* yielded the same result

In summary:

Mr Singer has in the last ten years published a total of 2 (two) scientific articles published in peer reviewed (quality controlled) journals. This hardly qualifies him as an expert whose views outweighs the work done by many thousands of scientist over the world and which is summarized in the last IPPC report. Thus, given the freedom of information principle that I am sure that both you and I subscribe to, you should allow him to bring forward his arguments. But in the interest of the public and you readers, you should check weather his scientific knowledge and integrity gives his view any specific weight.

Yours sincerely,

Bo Norrman

For the record: I am not a climate scientist. I "only" have 25 years of science background
