The Simon Wiesenthal center strongly condemned what it branded
"anti-Semitic" statements by Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez and demanded a public apology in a statement obtained Monday
by AFP.
The Jewish human rights organization, whose Latin American headquarters
is based in Argentina, assailed Chavez's December 24 statement
that Jews are "descendants of those who crucified the Christ."
"The world belongs to everyone, but it seems that minorities,
descendants of those who crucified the Christ, have taken all
the world's wealth," Chavez said, according to the center's
statement.
In a letter of protest addressed to Chavez, the Wiesenthal Center
took issue with what it said were the "two central arguments
of anti-Semitism" -- that Jews killed Jesus Christ and that
Jews covet wealth.
