Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell was on Thursday losing some 226,000
barrels of crude per day as a result of hostage-takings and damaged
pipeline in oil rich southern Nigeria's Niger Delta, spokesmen
said.
Nigeria is Africa's largest producer with a daily output of 2.6
million barrels. Shell accounts for almost half of that figure
and the loss Thursday is 9.04 percent of the country's total output.
"We decided to shut in 120,000 barrels of oil because of
security concerns which followed the kinapping of four workers,"
he said.
Another spokesman tolld AFP some 106,000 barrels were also lost
when unknown vandals damaged the company's supply pipeline in
Brass Creek.
