Haiti's interim Prime Minister, Gerard Latorture, has extended
an invitation to CARICOM leaders to send a ministerial team to
monitor upcoming elections in the troubled Caribbean country.
Latorture held a press conference in Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday
evening after meeting with Prime Minister Patrick Manning and
high ranking members of CARICOM.
Latorture also made a plea to Manning as the current chairman
of CARICOM, a grouping of Caribbean states, to welcome Haiti back
into the Caribbean community.
"I said, send a group to Haiti and send them to see the process
before the election or after the election," said Latorture.
CARICOM has refused to acknowledge the US appointed interim government
since President Jean Bertrand-Aristide was exiled in early 2004.
"We consider ourselves a member of CARICOM," Latorture
said and commented that communication problems have caused a misunderstanding
between Haiti and its Caribbean neighbours.
He stressed that the future of Haiti is tied to that of CARICOM.
Haiti's elections on February 7 will occur at the same time as
an intersessional CARICOM meeting to be held in Trinidad and Tobago
from February 8-9.
Manning has not commented on if CARICOM is considering the request.
Latorture was accompanied by his ambassador to the Organisation
of American States, Duly Brutus.
