OPEC should leave its production ceiling unchanged for now, an
influential advisory group recommended Monday on the eve of a
meeting in Vienna by the powerful cartel.
The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries often, but
not always, follows the advice of the ministerial monitoring sub-committee,
comprising OPEC members Iran, Nigeria and Kuwait as well as the
group's secretary general.
The recommendation is "no change," said Nawal Al-Fuzaia,
a senior member of the Kuwaiti delegation. Kuwaiti Energy Minister
Sheikh Ahmad Fahd al-Sabah did not attend the closed-door session
because he chose not to come to Vienna.
Nigerian presidential advisor Edmund Daukoru, who is currently
OPEC president, and Iran's Oil Minister Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh did
take part in the committee meeting but did not reveal any details
about the discussions afterwards.
A majority of the 11-nation cartel supports keeping the status
quo at Tuesday's meeting, amid rising oil prices, which have been
fuelled by political fears in major producers Iran and Nigeria.
