US National Intelligence Director John Negroponte on Tuesday accused
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of wasting millions of dollars
on an "extravagant" foreign policy instead of fighting
poverty at home.
"I would say that it's clear that (Chavez) is spending hundred
of millions, if not more, for his very extravagant foreign policy,"
said Negroponte, speaking to the US Senate Armed Services Committee.
The expenditure is "at the expenses of the Venezuelan people,
because there is a great deal of poverty," he added.
Caracas and Washington have been at odds since the populist Chavez
was elected Venezuelan president in 1998 and struck up close relations
with Cuba. For years since he has been a vociferous critic of
US foreign policy.
Venezuela is the fourth-largest supplier of crude oil to the United
States, selling it about 1.5 million barrels daily.
