President
Hugo Chávez' government plans to order 36 large oil tankers
with a cost exceeding USD 3 billion from Brazilian shipyards,
Brazilian media reported on Wednesday.
Daily
newspaper O Globo informed that the transaction was disclosed
around one year ago in Caracas. Now, the two governments have
materialized the operation by initialing an agreement under which
Brazilian shipyards are to construct the ships.
The
Brazilian shipyards are to build 41 large oil tankers for Transpetro,
the transportation branch of Brazilian state oil firm Petrobras,
for USD 1.9 billion.
Argentine
and Spanish companies were also in the competition to be granted
contracts of state oil holding Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa)
and Petrobras for the construction of these ships. Argentina and
Spain are to manufacture five and two tankers, respectively.
In
Brazil, ships would be built by five shipyards, including three
in Rio de Janeiro state, one in Pernambuco (northeast) and another
in Santa Caterina (south), Efe reported.
Contractors
include the firms Atlantico Sul, Mauá Jurong, Eisa (Ilha
S.A.) and Keppel Fels.
According
to Ariovaldo Rocha, president of the Brazilian shipyards business
association Sinaval, said Pdvsa and Petrobras orders are to result
in the creation of over 10,000 new direct jobs and the preservation
of some 40,000 existing jobs.
