Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here on Thursday that sanctions
against Iran would not bring about a resolution to the row over its
nuclear programme.
"Russia does not believe that sanctions would serve the purpose
of settling the various issues," Lavrov told a news conference
after a meeting of the five permanent members of the United Nations
Security Council plus Germany.
"We believe that there must be a balanced approach by the international
community to each and every conflict within international law."
Russia believed "that all members of the international community
must fulfill their commitments and obligations".
Lavrov said the "sole solution" to the Iran issue would come
through the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"We will be demanding the full cooperation of Iran with the IAEA.
Only then will it be possible for Iran to make peaceful use of nuclear
technology," Lavrov said.
The meeting in Berlin took place after Britain, China, France, Russia
and the United States on Wednesday put aside weeks of differences to
agree a non-binding statement giving Iran 30 days to abandon its uranium
enrichment activities.
Russia and China have opposed any hint of punitive action against Iran,
a key trading partner of both countries.
