Russian gas giant Gazprom said Tuesday that it was interested in Iranian gas field South Pars, estimated by some to be the biggest reserve of natural gas in the world.

Gazprom chairman Alexei Miller met with Iranian ambassador Gholamreza Ansari in Moscow on Tuesday to discuss a possible role for Gazprom in the development of the Iranian gas sector, the company said in a statement.

Gazprom identified two main projects for Russian-Iranian cooperation, namely the construction of a pipeline linking Iran, Pakistan and India, as well as Gazprom's involvement in developing South Pars.

South Pars is a giant gas field under development in the Persian Gulf. It is shared by Iran and Qatar.
