Russian
energy giant Gazprom said on Tuesday that it had made its first delivery
of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Britain.
The state-controlled group delivered 140,000 cubic metres (4.9 million
cubic feet) of GNL to British energy company BP, the equivalent of 85
million cubic metres of natural gas, it said.
LNG is natural gas that has been condensed into a liquid via a condensation
process. It is about one six-hundredth the volume of natural gas in
normal atmospheric conditions and is therefore suited to transportation
in tankers.
The delivery was made to BP's LNG gas terminal on the Isle of Grain
in the Medway river to the east of London.
The LNG was bought by Gazprom from French group Gaz de France. In November,
Russian gas giant Gazprom agreed a deal with Gaz de France to exchange
pipelined natural gas for liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The Russian company has already made two deliveries of LNG to the US
and is taking advantage of the technology to enter new markets.
