Trader Trafigura will sell Ecuador 2.75 million barrels of diesel under
the terms of a tender awarded late Wednesday, market sources said Thursday.
Trafigura will sell the 0.7% sulfur diesel, delivered to Esmeraldas
or
Libertad, at $4/barrel more than Platts US Gulf Coast assessments, sources
said.
Up to three cargoes are expected to be delivered each month from late
April to August, each consisting of 200,000-220,000 barrels, sources
said.
Projector, which has been Ecuador's main supplier in the past two years,
had also bid for the tender but it offered a higher price than Trafigura,
sources said.
In January Projector won a similar tender to supply Ecuador with diesel
for the first months of 2006 by offering to sell at US Gulf Coast assessments
plus $4.88/barrel.
One source said Ecuador was not likely to seek more cargoes of 0.04%
sulfur diesel in the market. Ecuador, which bought a 200,000-barrel
cargo of
the low sulfur diesel last week, expects a desulfurization unit at the
Esmeraldas refinery that was shut down in February to be back up within
15
days, the source said.
The tender was awarded as a shipping backlog in the Panama Canal
threatens to slow down shipments of products from the US Gulf Coast
to South
America's west coast, a source said. In addition to Ecuador, Peru and
Chile
have also sought diesel in the market in recent days.
