EU set to approve E.ON takeover of Endesa: report

AFP

Anti-trust services in the European Commission are set to unconditionally approve the proposed takeover of Spanish energy group Endesa by German giant E.ON, German newspaper Handelsblatt said.

The newspaper said that its article, which is to be published on Tuesday, was based on sources close to the case in the European Commission, the EU's anti-trust watchdog.

E.ON had announced in February an offer to buy Endesa for 29.1 billion euros (35 billion dollars), but the bid faces opposition from the Spanish government which favours a merger of Endesa and the country's biggest gas supplier, Gas Natural.

Gas Natural has made an offer for Endesa of 22.5 billion euros, but its approach has been complicated by competition concerns and court action by Endesa.

On March 16, the EU regulators said that they would decide by April 25 whether to allow E.ON's bid for Spanish group Endesa.
