Alejandro Granado, the head of refining at venezuela's oil company PDVSA,said
Tuesday that Canada's SNC-Lavalin Group will conduct conceptual studies
for a 800,000 barrels a day of heavy crude up grader refinery, Granado
said.
PDVSA
aims to build a heavy oil upgrading refinery in the country's extra
heavy oil Orinoco Faja River basin to covert the 7-8 API grade oil into
lighter, more marketable at the new refinery Granado, said to reporters
at an oil and gas conference in Caracas.
SNC-Lavalin
spokeswoman Gillian MacCormack said a contract had not yet been signed,
but that the company has been discussing various projects with PDVSA,
AP reported.
The
plan is part of the 2005 - 2012 PDVSA development plan to boost its
refining capacity to exploit the potential of its Orinoco Faja belt
basin.
The
Faja Basin holds at least 235 billions barrels of extra-heavy oil, which
are now been certified by PDVSA.
At
present, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Total are operating
four upgrading projects that jointly produce about 600,000 barrels a
day of synthetic crude. Norway's and BP also have minority stake in
some of the projects.
