Dozens of firemen doused a fire that broke out Sunday on one of the
two main oil exporting pipelines in southern Iraq, an official with
the state-run Southern Oil Company said.
"The fire has been extinguished by a team of firemen belonging
to the Southern Oil Company," he said, without offering details.
The fire, of unknown origin, broke out at about 9:30 am (0530 GMT) Sunday.
Iraq's oil infrastructure is a favourite target for insurgents seeking
to bring the country's oil-dependent economy to its knees.
Iraq exports the bulk of its 1.7 million barrels of crude oil per day
from two southern terminals at Khor Amaya and Basra.
Iraq also recently started exporting about 200,000 barrels of oil per
day to the nothern Turkish terminal of Ceyhan.
