The
head of Ecuador's state oil company Fernando Gonzalez said he resigned
his post for personal reasons on Wednesday.
"It's time
to go," Gonzalez, who was Petroecuador chief for four months, told
Reuters in a phone interview. "I have done my job and I'm leaving
for personal reasons and not because of any disagreements with the administration."
Gonzalez, a close
friend of President Alfredo Palacio, was key in Ecuador's annulment
of its contract with Occidental Petroleum (OXY.N: Quote, Profile, Research)
on May 15.
The annulment came
after a long-running legal spat over accusations that the Los Angeles-based
company sold an oil block without government authorization.
Petroecuador took
over the company's oilfields in the Amazon region, but has run into
disagreements with the Economy Ministry over the release of much-needed
operational funds.
