Brazil on Thursday joined international condemnation of the North Korean missile tests and demanded a "strong reaction" from the United Nations as it debates the crisis in New York.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim said his government will issue a statement "condemning North Korea's missile firings."

"We think that this (the missile launches) does not contribute to peace. All countries have a right to establish their defense systems but I think they should exercise self-control," Amorim said at a press briefing in the Brazilian capital.

"We hope that there will be a strong UN reaction from and we will support the action that the United Nations adopts," the foreign minister said.

Brazil established diplomatic relations with North Korea in 2001 despite pressure from the United States not to help the Stalinist regime come out of its international diplomatic isolation as it pursues nuclear and missile programs.
