Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez began a visit to Qatar on Thursday
for talks with officials from the gas-rich Gulf state as part of a regional
tour that will also take in Iran, the QNA news agency said.
The 24-hour trip, during which Chavez will meet Emir Sheikh Hamad bin
Khalifa al-Thani, will be the fifth by the leftist Venezuelan leader
to close US ally Qatar in as many years.
During Chavez's last trip in March 2005, the two countries signed a
series of economic cooperation accords.
Qatar and oil-rich Venezuela cooperate closely on energy matters, especially
within the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
From Qatar, Washington's bete noire is expected to go to Tehran on Friday
for talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is locked
in a standoff with the international community over his country's nuclear
programme.
