Iran says won't cut oil production if Syria attacked

Iran's oil minister said on Thursday that the Islamic republic had no intention of cutting its oil exports if its ally Syria came under Israeli attack.

"We should not relate oil exports to political issues," Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh said when asked if Iran, OPEC's number-two exporter, could use oil as a weapon if Syria was attacked by mutual arch-enemy Israel.

"Political issues should be settled through political solutions," the minister was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

Like Syria, Iran is a major backer of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement -- whose capture of two Israeli soldiers sparked Israel's continuing attack against Lebanon.
