Scottish oil depot suffers 'serious' chemical leak

Grangemouth oil depot in central Scotland suffered a chemical leak in a "serious incident", police said on Wednesday.

"The emergency services are dealing with an ongoing serious incident at the Port of Grangemouth," a police statement read.

Police said there was no need for an evacuation yet and there was no "known immediate danger to the public".

Vapour was escaping from a metal container tank on the docks, causing a large plume above the River Forth. The wind was blowing the vapour towards the river, where it was dissipating.

"Efforts are being made to establish the identity of the vapour," the statement said.

The leak was declared a "major incident" by local emergency services and officials, but no one has been injured since chemicals were spilled in the dock area at around 4:00 pm (1500 GMT), a spokeswoman for Central Scotland Fire Service said.
