Total Europe’s E&P boss Michael Contie has said his company aims to increase its organization in Norway with the aim of becoming an operator again.

At the same time the Norwegian subsidiary is due to drill important wells this year and next which will be crucial for the future of its operations.

Total will drill a few, but very important wells this year and next, and if these are successful, it could mean a new, major field development could take place in the Norwegian Sea.

"Our ambition is to increase our organization heavily in Norway, Contie told offshore247.com.

"Sixteen per cent of Total's global production comes from the Norwegian Continental Shelf, so naturally this is a very important area for us. However, after the Frigg field was closed, we don't have any operatorships in Norway, so our main goal is to regain our status as operator, he added.

Total's Norwegian boss, Patrice de Vivies, told Offshore247.com that Total therefore is looking at recruiting young economists, technicians and engineers.

“The wells we are about to drill are very challenging High pressure/High temperature wells, so we also need to secure experienced personnel,” he added.

Among Total’s key prospects is Hild in the Norwegian North Sea which is currently under evaluation, and it may be developed via a tieback solution either to the British Bruce field , or via Heimdal, on the NCS, if it is successfully drilled.

Hans is in the Norwegian Sea, and it will be drilled later this year. Any eventual discovery here will probably be tied back to Shell's Onyx-discovery, using a complete subsea solution.

However, it Hans should prove to be a large discovery, it may be necessary with a new floating production unit. But the probability of success on Hans is put at one in five, - 20% - or slightly less.

Total's Victoria prospect is the largest remaining undeveloped gas discovery on the NCS, estimated to contain 118 billion standard cubic meters. As with Hans, a probable development option is to tie eventual production to Onyx, but it may also require a new floating production unit.
