end of Panama Canal closed briefly Tuesday on high winds

Strong winds in Panama halted vessel traffic on the Atlantic side of
the
Panama Canal for four hours Tuesday night, a Panama Canal Authority
spokeswoman said Wednesday.
"We still have winds today, but they have calmed down," she
told Platts.
The temporary shipping halt forced seven vessels entering the canal
from the Atlantic to reschedule their transits for Wednesday, the spokeswoman
said. She also confirmed that three barges -- the Perseus 5, Liberty
and Princess Aviv -- had run aground near the port of Cristobal and
the Manzanillo International Terminal due to the winds.
The authority had no information about any possible injuries to crew
members or
damage to the barges. It was also unclear if the barges were carrying
cargoes.
The heavy winds and rains have disrupted marine bunkering at Cristobal,
a
spokesman for Chevron's Fuel and Marine Marketing bunkering operation
said
earlier Wednesday
