EU energy ministers meeting hit by power blackout

EU energy ministers discussing cutting consumption were confronted with the reality of electricity shortages on Thursday when their meeting was interrupted by a power failure in the building.

The 20-minute blackout affected the EU Council building in the heart of Brussels European quarter and where representatives of member states hold their meetings.

"The meeting was disrupted but an emergency electricity supply did kick in," a European diplomat said.

The European Commission is pressing member states to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent by 2020 in a bid to offset global warming and to protect supplies.

There was no official word on the cause of the power cut.
