Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA has contained a fire the day after
an explosion rocked a natural gas pipeline in the west of the country,
the company said on Thursday.
PDVSA did not say what caused the explosion on Wednesday
but said it was "almost impossible" anyone had been injured.
The
company did not respond to requests for further details.
The pipeline runs through an area operated by oil company
Petrocumarebo, but a source at that company said the explosion took
place miles away from any of the company's facilities.
State news agency ABN initially reported the fire occurred
in the installations of Petrocumarebo, a joint venture between PDVSA
and a subsidiary of Canadian energy company Petrofalcon (PFC.TO: Quote,

A witness told Reuters by telephone that the fire broke
out after a massive explosion that was heard from more than 10 miles
(16 km) away.
PDVSA and the energy ministry have designated a commission
to study the causes of the incident.
