Venezuela
this month is shipping four power plants to Nicaragua to alleviate this
country's energy crisis, Managua Mayor Dionisio Marenco said.
Marenco told Efe that the 15-megawatt powerhouses are arriving in Nicaragua
this month but will be installed next January, when president-elect
Daniel Ortega takes office. "What we want is the new government
to begin by solving a problem we have inherited from the old government."
According
to Marenco, the power plants -that are to be based "in the outskirts
of Managua"- were negotiated by joint venture Alba Petróleos
de Nicaragua (Albanic) under an agreement Venezuelan state oil giant
Pdvsa and some Nicaraguan Mayoralties initialed last April.
Nicaragua
faces power outages ranging from four to 12 hours a day because of energy
disruptions resulting from a defective network, lack of water in dam,
and lack of liquidity.
