Belarus has resumed the transit of Russian oil to western Europe though
a vital pipeline that was the focus of a bitter dispute with Russia,
operators said Thursday.
"Oil transports on the chief pipelines began as planned and according
to agreements (the) two sides have reached," said Alexei Kostyuchenko,
director of the Gomeltransneft-Druzhba pipeline, according to the RIA-Novosti
news agency.
The operators confirmed to AFP that transit had resumed and clarified
that the oil currently being transported had accumulated in Belarus
since supplies through the pipeline were interrupted by the dispute
on Monday.
The Druzhba pipeline accounts for around a third of Russian oil exports
and some 12.5 percent of total EU oil consumption.
The spat has disrupted oil supplies to five EU countries and increased
fears over dependency on Russian energy sources.
